A rare Cantor's kukri snake has been rescued in Moulvibazar. Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation rescued the snake on Sunday 9 October from Bishwa Banik's grocery shop in Debpara, Nowagaon village, Sreemangal.
The snake was spotted in Bishwa Banik's shop in the morning and the Wildlife Service Foundation was informed. Swapan Deb Sajal, director of the foundation, then rescued it together with members of the Forest Department.
Dr Monirul H Khan, Dr Kamrul Hasan and Adnan Azad of the Department of Zoology at Jahangirnagar University confirmed the rescue.
A burrowing, nocturnal snake
They said the snake has no known Bengali name yet. It is nocturnal and spends most of its time underground, probably living on earthworms, larvae, and the eggs of ants and termites. It tends to burrow into soft soil, using its rostral scale, a structure at the front of the snake's snout, to stay underground.
The rescued snake measures 90-110 cm. It is now in the care of the Forest Department.
