Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has opened a tree planting programme at the Jatiya Sangsad. She inaugurated it on Monday (17 July) in the grounds of the Parliament Members' Club at the parliament building.

The Speaker said tree planting is an ongoing programme of the Jatiya Sangsad because protecting the environment is one of the most important issues. The adverse effects of climate change are affecting people's lives and pushing life into crisis, and there is no alternative to tree planting to overcome it, she said.

Tree planting creates a store of oxygen in the environment, she said, urging everyone to plant more trees to protect it.

She thanked everyone for taking part in the programme, and planted a mango sapling and a frangipani (kathgolap) sapling.

Deputy Speaker Md Shamsul Haque Tuku, whip Md Atiur Rahman Atik, whip Iqbalur Rahim, whip Samsul Haque Chowdhury, Umme Fatema Nazma Begum and Syeda Rubina Akter MP were among the members of parliament who took part. Officials of the parliament secretariat were also present.
