Ripe mangoes are now plentiful in the markets. It is the "honey months", the time to enjoy mangoes, jackfruit, litchis and other seasonal fruit to the full. Of all the season's fruit, the mango is the most popular, which is why it is called the king of fruits.
A ripe mango contains plenty of potassium, which the report says helps combat anaemia and keep the heart healthy. People with anaemia can make a habit of eating a little mango every day, and mango is also a beneficial fruit for people with bone problems.
But eating ripe mangoes the wrong way can also cause problems. Many people start eating mangoes without washing them properly, which can lead to indigestion and more acne. So what should you do?
Soak for two to three hours
Indian Ayurveda practitioner Dr Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya has advised in an Instagram post that mangoes should be soaked for at least 2-3 hours before eating.
Soaking removes excess phytic acid. Phytic acid is an anti-nutrient that stops the body absorbing some minerals such as iron, zinc and calcium, leading to deficiencies.
When mangoes are soaked in water for a few hours, nutrients are absorbed better. Eating soaked mangoes helps prevent acne, skin problems, headaches, constipation and other gut problems, she says.
Eat mango on its own
She also advises eating mango only as a fruit, not mixed with other food. Mixing mango with any food can cause fermentation in the gut, which worsens acne and other skin problems, and eating other food with mango also increases digestive trouble.
So eat mangoes at least an hour before or after a meal. To keep the body cool, and as a refreshing drink, you can also mix a teaspoon of basil (tulsi) seeds with mango, which she says cools the body further and helps prevent acne.
