China's research ships Xuelong and Xuelong 2 returned to the eastern city of Shanghai on Wednesday after an Arctic Ocean expedition of about three months. The two ships, known as Snow Dragon and Snow Dragon 2, took part in China's 16th Arctic Ocean expedition.
The expedition carried out extensive climate and environmental observation, scientific research and international cooperation. According to the expedition team, both its scope and the number of research tasks completed set new records.
Organised by China's Ministry of Natural Resources, the expedition involved four research vessels: Xuelong, Xuelong 2, Chiti and Thanso-3 (as Bangla Tribune spells them). Chiti and Thanso-3 are still at work and are expected back in China in mid-October.
Researchers say the results will help to understand global climate change more deeply and respond to its impacts, and will support sustainable development in the Arctic.
Through continued research in the Arctic, China is building knowledge of climate change, the marine environment and change in the polar regions.
