Members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali have rescued five snakes of three species and released them in Kuakata, Patuakhali. The snakes were freed in the tamarisk (jhau) forest beside the sea beach at 12 noon on Wednesday (1 March).

They were two venomous monocled cobras (padma gokhra), two non-venomous rat snakes (darash) and one mildly venomous kalnagini. Each snake was six feet long.

Present were Animal Lovers of Patuakhali team leader Abdul Kaiyum, Asadullah Ahsan Musa, Kalapara branch team leader Rakayet Ahsan and forest staff of the Mohipur forest office.

The members rescued the snakes on Tuesday afternoon from a professional snake charmer named Alamgir in front of the Patuakhali Bar Association. The snake charmer was let go after giving a written undertaking not to catch snakes.

Tariqul Islam, assistant conservator of forests of the Patuakhali district forest department, said the forest department had helped the members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali and is active in protecting wildlife.
