Snakes have been seen in the corridor of the education ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat. On the morning of Thursday, 27 August, three snakes were spotted in the 19th-floor corridor of Building 6, the floor on which the education minister and the secretary have their offices.

Ministry officials who saw them said that on entering the office in the morning they first saw two snakes in the corridor and then one more. Officers and staff were alarmed, and staff later killed all three snakes. What species they were is not known.

Officers and staff have expressed surprise at how snakes reached the 19th floor of the building. They suspect more snakes are in some storage area inside and feel afraid.

A programme officer who works on the 19th floor told Jagonews that staff were frightened to see snakes darting along the corridor and that questions have arisen over how they got into such a tall building.

"Surely snakes nested and laid eggs in some storage space at the top of the building, and these hatched from those eggs," he said, adding that staff responsible for building maintenance had been asked to look into it.
