Local people in Muradpur, Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram, have rescued a sick vulture from the clutches of a fox. The vulture is quite large, weighing an estimated 7 to 8 kg.

On receiving the news, Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Tahmina Arzu took charge of the vulture at midday on Tuesday (12 December) and took it to the upazila veterinary hospital, where it is now being treated.

On Monday, a fox attacked the vulture in the garden behind Nur Hadis's new house in Madhyam Bhaterkhil village of Muradpur union, leaving it weak. Two young men from the house, Shahidul Islam and Md Rakib, rescued the sick bird, took it home and gave it treatment and food. When Dr Tahmina Arzu was informed at midday on Tuesday, she came and took the vulture away.

"The vulture is very sick and weak. We gave it food and treatment," said Shahidul Islam, one of the rescuers.

Dr Tahmina Arzu said: "We have given the vulture first aid, but its physical condition is very fragile and it needs better treatment. It is not eating and is barely moving. We have informed the Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Department, but they have not come yet."

Md Ismail Hossain, range officer of the Chattogram Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Department, said: "We have learned that the vulture is currently at the Sitakunda upazila livestock office. We will go and bring it back and take the necessary steps."
