A rare Himalayan griffon vulture has been rescued from Sirajganj municipal town. Mamun Biswas, chairman of the environmental organisation The Bird Safety House, rescued the bird from the house of Pappu Sekh in the town's Amlapara neighbourhood at about 9pm on Saturday (13 December).

Pappu Sekh said the vulture fell to the ground, unable to fly. Some young men from the Jamuna river chars caught the sick bird and held it. When he learned of it, he brought it home. After three days of first aid, he informed Mamun Biswas, who went to Pappu's house with his people and took the bird away.

Mamun Biswas confirmed the rescue at about 11.30am on Sunday (14 December).

He told Jago News: "The tired vulture fell to the ground while flying a long way on its wings. This rare species is called the Himalayan griffon. I rescued it and am giving it food and medicine. We have contacted Molla Rezaul Karim, adviser to the Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF), and the Rajshahi divisional office of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation. We will hand the vulture over wherever they direct."
