Local people have rescued an endangered civet, known as gandhagokul, in Mechhra union of Sirajganj Sadar upazila.

The animal was rescued at 2pm on Thursday (17 February) near Rupsa Bazar in Mechhra union. The rare animal is now at the home of Farid Faraji.

Hundreds of people are crowding Farid Faraji's home to catch a glimpse of it. The animal lives on insects, poultry and pigeon chicks.

Local resident Farid Faraji said: "Our house is next to Rupsa Bazar. The animal was spotted in a bamboo clump beside the house. When local people tried to catch it, it took refuge in a big koroi tree. When it was chased there, it fell to the ground while jumping from one tree to another, and local people caught it and put it in a cage. It is now at my home."

Manun Biswas, chairman of The Bird Safety House, said he had received a phone call from the Rupsa Bazar area. The upazila nirbahi officer has been informed so that the civet can be rescued, and it will be handed over to the Forest Department, he said.
