A Siberian tiger has given birth to four cubs at a breeding centre in north-eastern China. The 17-year-old tigress delivered the cubs at the Hengdaohezi Siberian Tiger Park.

The tigress has given birth to several cubs over the years. She had the four cubs on 29 May: three males and one female.

The Siberian tiger is an endangered species, with fewer than a thousand left in the wild.

Park staff have been closely monitoring the health of the tigress and her cubs since the birth. "We weigh the cubs every morning to see if they are gaining weight. If not, we will arrange extra milk for them," said park keeper Zhang Yingying.

Twenty-three tiger cubs have been born at the park in the few weeks since the start of May. The Siberian Tiger Park is an important part of China's wildlife conservation programme. It opened in 1986 with 20 tigers and now has more than a thousand big cats.
