Hill runoff has started to recede in Sherpur. With no heavy rain for 48 hours, the district's main rivers have been flowing below the danger level since the morning of 10 July.

According to the latest Water Development Board data, at 9am on 11 July the Chellakhali river in Nalitabari upazila was 76 cm below the danger level; the Bhogai was 308 cm below at the Nakugaon point and 270 cm below at the Nalitabari point; and the Old Brahmaputra in Sadar upazila was 388 cm below. The Jhinaigati and Someshwari rivers were also below the danger level. As there are no crops standing in the fields at present, farmers have not suffered much damage.

Continuous rain on Wednesday and Thursday and a sudden hill runoff from upstream in India destroyed about 30 metres of the Sherpur-Nalitabari road via Gazirkhamar at Gollarpar. Drivers using the road and local residents are suffering. After inspecting the road, the deputy commissioner told the Water Development Board and the LGED to repair it quickly. The district administration is also ready with emergency assistance to deal with sudden hill runoff.

Water Development Board executive engineer Sudipta Chowdhury said geobags had been kept ready for emergency repairs if erosion hits the river embankments.

Sherpur deputy commissioner Farida Yasmin said the district administration had made all preparations, including dry food, to deal with a sudden flood, and had ordered quick repair of the broken road.
