Hazrat Ali Akanda of Sherpur drew attention with a fruit orchard on about 775 bighas. Within a year, it has grown to 1,000 bighas, setting an example of farming success.
From poverty to wholesale trade
Driven by poverty, Hazrat Ali Akanda of Kuthurakanda village in Sherpur once left home for Dhaka to seek his fortune. He worked as a grocery shop assistant and a street fruit hawker, among other jobs. Through many ups and downs, he succeeded in wholesale grocery trade, going from nothing to crores of taka, and then invested in farming for new success.
A strong orange crop
His farm has grown considerably in this time. He says well-planned investment in agriculture carries little risk and a real chance of success. This year's orange crop is very good, with coloured oranges hanging from the trees. He has far-reaching plans, and the commercial venture has produced the outline of an agritourism centre.
