A madrasa student has died of a snakebite in Sharsha, Jashore. Doctors say he died because of a lack of awareness.
He was declared dead by a doctor when he was taken to Jashore General Hospital at around 8pm on Friday, 21 June.
The dead boy, Forkanul Islam, 12, was the son of Alamgir Hossain of Tengrali village in Sharsha upazila's Dihi union. He studied at a hafizia madrasa in Chaugachha upazila.
Hours lost before hospital
Forkan's cousin Sohag Hossain said Forkan had gone on Thursday afternoon to visit his aunt's home at Kashipur Belta in Sharsha upazila. At around 11am on Friday a venomous snake bit him. After he was shown to village kabirajes, healers and others, his condition became critical and he was taken to Jashore General Hospital at around 8pm, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. Relatives could not say what kind of snake had bitten him.
Emergency department doctor Dr Md Shakirul Islam said Forkan had a snakebite wound on his finger. Because he was kept at home instead of being brought to hospital, the venom spread through his body and he died. The body has been sent to the morgue.
The doctor added that the hospital has an adequate stock of antivenom, and advised that anyone bitten by a snake be taken to the nearest hospital within 90 minutes, which gives a chance of saving their life.
Forkan was the elder of two siblings. The death has cast a pall of grief over the village.
