Villagers in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah, have beaten to death a fishing cat cub that was injured by a paddy-cutting harvester.

The incident happened at around 2pm on Thursday 14 August in a field at Satgachhi village in Shailkupa municipality.

Local people said paddy was being cut with a combine harvester in a plot in the Satgachhi field in the afternoon. The fishing cat, hiding in the paddy, got in front of the machine and was badly injured in the head and legs. As it tried to escape and reached an irrigation canal, several farmers beat it to death. It was then buried in a hole dug beside the canal.

Shailkupa upazila forest officer Moklesur Rahman said he was at a court in Gazipur and was sending a colleague to the spot. He would be able to give details later, he said.
