Islamic scholar and popular speaker Shaikh Ahmadullah has called on people to grow vegetables on their rooftops and in pots on their balconies. He recently posted a photo of vegetable growing on social media, encouraging everyone to grow at least some vegetables from wherever they are.

"We grow vegetables on our rooftop and in pots on the balcony," Shaikh Ahmadullah wrote. "We also farm a neighbour's empty land next to our house with his permission. At the height of the season our plot produces 18 to 19 kinds of vegetables and fruit. We sometimes take help from day labourers, but most of the time the whole family farms together."

"On the one hand it meets our own need for vegetables, and on the other we give them as gifts to relatives and friends," he wrote. "Nothing compares to the joy of seeing flowers and fruit on plants you have planted with your own hands."

"In this way, all of us can grow more or fewer vegetables from wherever we are," the scholar wrote. "It helps meet a family's food needs, gives physical exercise and lets us celebrate the joy of new creation."

Finally, he said: "We are planning an effective initiative from the foundation soon to break the vegetable syndicate."
