All the credit for the farm on the roof of Sherpur Government Primary School in Shibpur upazila, Narsingdi, goes to the school's caretaker, Al Amin. He started in 2016 after seeing rooftop farms featured in the media.
Dragon fruit on the school roof
On 4,000 square feet of roof across two adjoining buildings, he has knowledgeably built a garden of dragon fruit and other fruits and crops. Such a farm on a school roof, even in a village, is truly novel.
Paid from his own salary
Out of love for farming, Al Amin invests from his small income, using part of his salary each month to enrich the garden. Over several years he has coloured the roof with variety through his own labour and knowledge, and has become a colourful figure in the minds of the young pupils. With a farm on their school building, the students are seeing the positive results of rooftop farming.
