Wide-ranging research on rooftop farming is under way. The Department of Agricultural Botany at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) has built a model rooftop farm for research and has also arranged training for rooftop farming entrepreneurs.
Why urban rooftops matter
A patch of farming on a city roof or yard can supply safe food while keeping the city green and raising oxygen levels, and such initiatives are important for coping with a changing climate. That is what SAU's rooftop farming research is finding, said Professor Mahbub Islam of the Department of Agricultural Botany.
Building a model
Entrepreneurs have many questions, he said: what the roof should be like, and which fruits and crops to grow. So the department is trying to develop a model for rooftop farming through research. SAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Kamal Uddin Ahamed said the research findings must be shared with everyone involved in agriculture.
Alongside research, training in rooftop farming is held here. The roof can be called a rooftop farming laboratory, from which the future shape of rooftop farming may emerge.
