A child named Ariful Islam (9) has died of a venomous snakebite in Shyamnagar, Satkhira. The incident happened on Friday evening (1 August), and he reportedly died around 10pm on the way to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex.

Ariful was the son of Abdul Alim of Kharitala village in Kaliganj upazila, and the younger of two siblings.

The boy's maternal uncle said Ariful was playing inside the house in the evening when a snake bit him. He was first taken to a local ojha, but as his condition worsened he was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Dr Shakir Hossain, on duty in the emergency department of Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex, said: "We have antivenom in stock. But often, when patients arrive late, there is no remedy. That is what happened with this child."
