Forty-five kalkeute (krait) hatchlings have been rescued from a house in Shyamnagar, Satkhira. The snakes were recovered from the house of Mohiuddin in the Khyagraghat area of the upazila's Ishwaripur union at around 11am on Sunday, 22 September.

Local resident Jannatul Naim said the boundary wall in front of "Uncle" Mohiuddin's house was very old, so it was decided to demolish it and build a new one. Workers began knocking it down on Sunday morning and first spotted a single snake hatchling.

When they then found a number of snake eggs there, a snake charmer was called. After he arrived, 45 snakes were recovered one by one. The snake charmer said they were kalkeute.

Ishwaripur union chairman GM Shokor Ali said that as word spread, people from different areas crowded in to see the snakes. "Rather than killing the snakes, we have arranged to hand them over to the local forest department," he said.
