A child named Sharafat Hossain Sifat, 7, died of a snakebite in Shyamnagar, Satkhira.

The incident happened on Thursday (16 May) evening in the Mollapara (Club Mor) area of Atulia union in the upazila. Sifat was the son of Shahin Alam of Satkhira town.

According to the family, his mother asked him in the evening to check whether the ducks and chickens had gone into their coop. When he went near the chicken coop, a snake bit him. He was first given village treatment by a local ojha (traditional healer). When his condition worsened, he was taken to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex at around 8pm, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Local union parishad member Md Robiul Islam said Sifat was taken to hospital after the snakebite, where the doctor declared him dead.

Sakir Hossain, the doctor on duty in the emergency department of Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex, said the child had died before being brought to hospital.
