There is no alternative to faith free of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and righteous deeds for salvation on the Day of Judgement. On that day all people will be in fear of Allah, even the prophets and messengers, because no one knows how Allah will treat whom on that day.
In hadith, the beloved Prophet described the terror of that day. He will be in prostration, and Allah Himself will tell him to rise. Lifting his head from prostration, he will intercede for the judgement to begin, and then the judgement of the hereafter will start.
The Prophet's warning to his own family
On that day, whoever has a good record of deeds will succeed. How fearful a time even the prophets and messengers will pass is clear from a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA). He said that when the verse "And warn your nearest kinsmen" (Surah Ash-Shu'ara, verse 214) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) stood and announced:
O people of Quraysh! Prepare your souls (through Allah's oneness and worship). I cannot be of any use to you before Allah.
O Banu Abd Manaf! I cannot do you any good before Allah.
O Abbas, son of Abdul Muttalib! I cannot do you any good before Allah.
O Safiyyah, aunt of the Messenger! I will be of no use to you before Allah.
O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad (PBUH)! Ask of my wealth whatever you wish. I will be of no use to you before Allah. (Bukhari)
So the duty of a believing Muslim is to live according to what Allah declared in the verses that follow this warning, commanding that the Prophet be followed: "And lower your wing to those of the believers who follow you. Then if they disobey you, say: I am free of what you do. And put your trust in the Almighty, the Most Merciful, who sees you when you stand (in prayer) and your movements among those who prostrate. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." (Surah Ash-Shu'ara, verses 215-220)
Faith and good deeds
If the Prophet (PBUH) made such a declaration about his own clan, uncle, aunt and daughter regarding Allah's oneness and worship, how can other Muslims disobey Allah and still hope for the Prophet's intercession?
It is established from the guidance of the Quran and Sunnah that no child of Adam will be saved in the hereafter without faith free of shirk and righteous deeds. Salvation will be safe and easy for those who follow the beloved Prophet.
Believing Muslims should therefore shape their lives with faith free of shirk and good deeds, and live in the light of the Quran and Sunnah.
May Allah grant the Muslim ummah faith free of shirk and the ability to devote themselves to His worship, and may He grant them every kind of intercession promised in hadith on the plain of gathering. Ameen.
