A farmer named Hasan has caught a large venomous Russell's viper in Shimultala field, near the border zero line at Munshipur village in Damurhuda upazila, Chuadanga. The snake was handed to the Forest Department at about 9pm on Thursday 29 October.

Local people say that at about 4:30pm the snake was trying to bite a garole sheep in the field. Hasan, son of Siraj of Munshipur, struck it with a stick, caught it injured and shut it in a cage. Word spread and a crowd gathered to see it.

The upazila forest office was told at about 8:30pm, and forest guard Shahajamal Ripon went and took charge of the snake.

Deputy ranger Shariful Islam Kajol of Jibannagar upazila confirmed it was a Russell's viper, a highly venomous snake. He said the Khulna forest division had been contacted and a team of experts would come to release it in the Sundarbans; preparations were under way on Friday 30 October.

The report was filed by Banglanews24's district correspondent in Chuadanga.
