Scarcity, or a feeling of want, is something we are increasingly coming to know.

You may have heard that shortages of water, oil or bees are growing. But many other resources on Earth are running out fast or are at risk of vanishing because they are not used properly, and they affect our daily lives in many ways. The report describes six of them.

By 2019, about 500,000 objects were orbiting the Earth. Only 2,000 of them are actually working satellites, used for communication, GPS or watching our favourite television programmes. The rest is debris from rocket launches and earlier collisions in orbit.

So what is the problem? These 500,000 objects are the ones identified so far, and new things are launched into orbit every day. As technology improves, sending something into orbit has become ever easier.

But there is no traffic control in orbit, and so far there is no technology to clear away this useless junk. As a result, the orbits around the Earth are steadily filling up.
