Plants lose their freshness in hot weather. At this time, even when a rose plant is flowering regularly, brown or burn-like patches may appear on the edges of its leaves. Gradually the leaves look as if they are drying out, and often they seem to be scorched. The problem is seen especially in the hot season. But temperature is not the only cause; several other factors can produce these symptoms in a rose plant.

If a rose plant stays in intense direct sun for a long time, burn marks can appear on the leaves. In excessive heat the leaves are gradually damaged. So it is important to protect the plant from the harsh midday sun on hot days. If necessary, keep it in partial shade; soft morning and afternoon light gives good results.

Both too little and too much water can cause problems for a rose. If water stands in the soil, or the soil dries out completely, the leaves may become spotted. Make sure the pot has proper drainage. The plant generally needs more water in the heat, but before watering, check whether the top of the soil has dried. Watering in the morning is best.

Many people use extra fertiliser in the hope of better flowers, which can harm the plant. In hot weather especially, the plant cannot take up excess nutrients. So fertiliser should be applied in the right dose and the right way; otherwise spots or burn marks may appear on the leaves.
