Growing vegetables in rooftop gardens is becoming popular, and you can keep doing it through the monsoon for a good yield all season. Vegetables in tubs need a lot of care, with particular attention to fertiliser, water and nutrients. Sowing the seeds of certain vegetables in the rainy season can fill a rooftop garden with produce.
Tomato, chilli and aubergine
Tomatoes can be grown in the monsoon too. Loam soil is best for them, and they need at least six hours of sunlight a day, so try to place tomato tubs on the east side.
Green chillies grow well in the humid monsoon weather. Choose well-drained soil mixed with organic fertiliser and sow the seeds where there is good sunlight; chillies do very well in bright sun.
Aubergine can be grown very well in the monsoon. Sow the seeds where there is direct sunlight and water regularly and in moderation. The plants will grow quickly and bear fruit early.
Okra, cucumber, peas and bitter gourd
The monsoon is the ideal time to sow okra. It does very well in sandy loam, and needs six hours of sunlight a day, which can be direct or indirect.
Cucumbers also yield well in the monsoon. Sow the seeds in sandy soil, water moderately and make sure drainage is very good for a good harvest.
Pea plants grow fast, and even faster in the monsoon. Sow pea seeds in well-drained soil with good organic matter in humid weather, and new shoots will appear very quickly.
Bitter gourd can be grown very well in the monsoon. Sow the seeds where there is good sunlight. As it is a climbing plant, give it firm support as it grows.
