Rooftop farming is now turning into a farm factory. Rooftop farming entrepreneurs are producing fruit, crops and fish together in automatic aquaponics systems.
One such successful venture belongs to Mahfuz Hasnat Kamrul of Mirpur in the capital.
How rooftop aquaponics spread
A few years ago, Professor Abdus Salam of the Faculty of Fisheries at Bangladesh Agricultural University started integrated farming with an aquaponics system on the roof of his home. Many others have since followed.
As part of that trend, Mahfuz Hasnat Kamrul has turned a 2,000-square-foot roof into an automated, integrated growing area.
Planned layout, early results
Because the measurements and structure were carefully planned, the venture is attractive to look at and succeeded within a short time. An organisation named Ecotech Agro provided the technical support for this aquaponics system, bringing new ideas to it.
By their calculation, the simple and well-arranged system can bring a return from farming within a short time.
