Environment, Forest and Climate adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has said: "The greenery we see all around us may not be here in two or three decades. We must pay attention to planting trees."

She made the remark on the morning of Thursday, 26 June, at the inauguration of an afforestation programme covering road dividers, footpaths, the banks of canals and water bodies and other places, held at the Harar Bari premises in Purbachal New Town.

She said: "So far we have been able to protect 144 acres of forest land. The climate of the sub-town was just like a forest. We destroyed it for people's housing. Those for whom we did it are no longer on the streets. But for those who have no housing, we have not been able to provide housing here."

The event was chaired by Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Mohammad Ejaz. Present were Dr Farhina Ahmed, secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Md Riazul Islam, chairman of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK); and Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury, chief conservator of forests of the Forest Department, among others.
