A slow loris, a rare species, has been rescued from the area of the Rangamati Betar (radio) station.

On the morning of Thursday, 1 July, station employees Ripon Chakma and Robi Chakma found the animal injured in a bush next to the Rangamati Betar building.

They said that because vehicles were not running during the lockdown, they were walking to the office. Passing through the bushes, they saw a cat-like animal lying on the ground. Looking closer, they found it was a baby slow loris lying injured, with one front leg severed. They brought it to the radio station, gave it first aid and informed the Forest Department, to whose staff the animal was later handed over.

S M Mahbubul Alam, Sadar range officer of the Rangamati Forest Department, said this species was once found in the Chittagong Hill Tracts but is now almost extinct. This is a baby, he said, and its mother may also be in the area. The baby's leg was severed in an attack by a dog or some other animal.

He added that the slow loris would be treated at the livestock hospital, and once it recovered a decision would be taken on where to release it.

Present at the handover were Rangamati Betar regional director Mohammad Selim, regional engineer Abu Sayed and assistant news controller A M Nurul Amin.
