Shaon, the only tigress at Rangpur Recreation Park and Zoo, has died. She died in her cage on Friday night (4 February), leaving Rangpur zoo without a tiger.
Deputy curator Ambar Ali Talukdar confirmed the death to Jagonews24 on Saturday afternoon (5 February).
He said the cage held only the one tigress, called Shaon. She was brought to Rangpur zoo in 2010, was born on 30 June 2003 and was 18 years and seven months old. She had no disease before her death and died at about 10:30pm on Friday.
Died of old age
Ambar Ali said the tigress was old. Tigers usually live 15 to 16 years, so she died of old age. After a post-mortem on Friday night, her body was buried at the zoo in an environmentally safe way.
Rangpur zoo is one of two government zoos in the country. It was set up in 1989 in the Hanumantala area of Rangpur city during the rule of the late President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, and opened to visitors in 1992.
The zoo, spread over about 22 acres, has 260 animals of 33 species, notably lions, tigers, hippopotamuses, deer, pythons, emus, ostriches, monkeys, cassowaries, donkeys, horses and bears.
