Posts spread on social media claiming that an Argentina supporter died after being bitten by a snake because he kept watching a football match instead of seeking treatment. No truth was found in the claim. In fact, the man died while under treatment in hospital as the match was being played.

He died at around 1.30am on the night of 19 July while being treated at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. He was Habibur Rahman, 65.

Habibur Rahman was the son of the late Abdur Rahman of Abdullahpur village in Latibpur union of Mithapukur upazila, Rangpur.

Abdul Matin Badal, the local union parishad member for ward 8, confirmed the matter to Jagonews.

He said Habibur Rahman went to check an irrigation pump near his house that night. At around 8.30pm, on his way home from the pump house, he was bitten by a snake. He was taken first to Mithapukur Upazila Health Complex and, at around 10.30pm, from there to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he died at around 1.30am while under treatment.

Asked about the claim that he died while watching Argentina play, the UP member said: "He was under treatment in hospital at that time. So when would he have watched the match?"
