A woman in her sixties has been killed in a wild elephant attack in Longadu upazila of Rangamati. The incident happened at Rangipara in Bogachattar union of Longadu upazila late on the night of Sunday (15 July).

The dead woman has been identified as Arja Begum, wife of the late Zahirul Islam of the Rangipara Forest Office area.

According to local sources, an elephant attacked the woman's house at around 2am on Sunday night. As she tried to move from one room to another to save herself, she was caught in the elephant's trunk. The wild elephant broke her arms and legs and mangled her body on the spot. At the same time the herd also wrecked the house she lived in.

Confirming the incident, Harunur Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Longadu police station, said an elderly woman had died in a wild elephant attack at Rangipara last night, and police had gone to the scene.
