On Ulon Road, Rampura, in the capital, Bangladesh Bank officer Mushheda Khanam Renu has built a rich rooftop farm. Along with vegetables, flowers and fruit, she produces seedlings of local and foreign plants, using various techniques and technologies.

She has a very busy job at Bangladesh Bank, yet keeps her free time active. With a special pull towards rooftop crops, flowers and fruit, she puts the creative part of her mind into rooftop farming.

There is no end to learning in farming, and much can be learned from plants and crops. This is how she learned to produce grafted seedlings, which is quite profitable commercially.

Applying various technologies and techniques, she has made the roof a source of extra income. Her husband, Riazul Islam, helps a little; he says there is a great shortage of advisers for hobby farming.

Several rooftop farming support businesses have already sprung up in the capital. Professional entrepreneurs like her show it does not take long to move from hobby rooftop farming to commercial profit.
