The family of Rajshahi University (RU) student Shakinur Rahman, who died of a snakebite, has received an insurance claim of Tk 2 lakh.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Golam Sabbir Sattar handed the cheque to Shakinur Rahman's mother at noon on Tuesday, 28 May, in the vice-chancellor's office in the Syed Nazrul Islam Administrative Building.

The university's student adviser Professor Dr Jahangir Alam Saud and associate professor of psychology Dr Tarun Kumar Joarder were present.

Earlier, on Monday (20 May), SM Nuruzzaman, chief executive officer (CEO) of Zenith Islami Life Insurance, handed the Tk 2 lakh cheque to Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar.

Shakinur's elder brother Md Mosharraf Hossain told Jagonews24: "We are grieving the loss of my brother. We never imagined we would lose him so young. No one can perhaps fill the gap he has left, but we thank the university administration for standing by our family with financial help in so short a time."

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Golam Sabbir Sattar said: "We are grieving the loss of our talented student Shakinur Rahman. We may never be able to make up for his family's pain, but we have tried to stand by them. After taking charge I introduced health insurance for students, and its benefits are now being seen. The university administration has done its best to stand by Shakinur's family."
