In the Uposhohor area of Rajshahi city, a young horticulturist has been rooftop farming for ten years. Inside the house and on the roof, he has arranged many familiar and unfamiliar plants. He started as a hobby, but the venture has become commercially profitable.
A room for plants
On the top floor of the four-storey building, one room is home not to people but to plants. Here horticulturist Shaheen Salehuddin has set up a nursery of ornamental indoor plants, and he now earns a commercial profit. He also takes part in various fairs.
His father was an agriculturist and his mother a botanist, and his love of plants is bound up with many memories of his father.
A mixed rooftop farm
At the very top of the house is the rooftop farm, a mixed plot of fruit, flowers, vegetables and ornamental plants.
Inspired by Mati O Manush
As a child, he was inspired by the Bangladesh Television programme Mati O Manush and grew up loving plants. Now he not only fulfils his own wishes but also sends plants to enthusiasts across the country online and gives rooftop farming advice.
