A mobile court in Rajshahi has sentenced a young man named Liton Hossain to three days in jail for hunting migratory birds. He is the son of the late Taji Mondal of the Sreerampur area.

He was detained on the morning of Tuesday, 28 January, in a joint drive by the wildlife inspector of the Rajshahi Forest Department and the river police. Four dead birds were found with him. The court then ordered his imprisonment. Ashik Zaman, assistant commissioner of the district administration, conducted the court.

Forest Department wildlife inspector Jahangir Kabir said four dead common teal and about 300 metres of current net were seized from Liton.

"We often carry out drives on the Padma chars in Rajshahi, and we keep finding the carcasses of migratory birds there," he said. "Since the government announced rewards for informants, someone told us that poison bait had been laid on Monday evening. Acting on that information, we carried out the drive and caught Liton with the birds. We then informed the district administration, which sent an executive magistrate, who conducted the mobile court."

Ashik Zaman, assistant commissioner of the Rajshahi district administration, said Liton had been given three days in jail through the mobile court, and the seized illegal net had been burnt.
