Mango picking in Rajshahi will begin on Thursday (4 May), and mangoes will appear in Rajshahi's markets the same day. Gooti (local seedling) mangoes will be available first.
Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ahmed gave the information at a meeting on the harvesting, transport, sale and market monitoring of mangoes on Wednesday morning (3 May).
Dates by variety
He said that this year the picking dates have been set by variety as follows:
- Gooti mangoes: 4 May
- Gopalbhog: 15 May
- Lakshmanbhog (Lakhna) and Rani Pasand: 20 May
- Himsagar (Khirsapat): 25 May
- Langra: 6 June
- Amrapali and Fazli: 15 June
- Ashna and BARI-4: 10 July
- Gourmati: 15 July
- Ilamati: from 20 August
- Katimon and BARI-11: all year round
The deputy commissioner also said that a maund of mangoes will be 40 kg. "We will tell the UNOs and the officers in charge (OCs) of police stations about this. Nowhere will a maund of mangoes be counted at a higher weight. We always want to stand by the farmers," he said.
At the meeting, Majdar Hossain, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Rajshahi district, said that last year mango trade in Rajshahi was worth Tk 1,000 crore. This year mangoes have been grown on 19,578 hectares in the district and the trees are expected to produce 2.58 lakh tonnes, with a market worth around Tk 1,500 crore.
Mango traders, courier service representatives, fruit research representatives and agriculture department officials attended the meeting.
