An 18-foot python weighing about 50 kg has been rescued in South Rajapur area of Sharankhola upazila in Bagerhat.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, 10 March, the python swallowed a goat weighing about 20 kg belonging to local resident Sohrab Faraji. The snake was later rescued and released into the Sundarbans through the joint efforts of villagers, members of the Community Patrol Group (CPG), the forest department and the Wild Team.

Sohrab Faraji said the python, which had come from the Sundarbans, swallowed his beloved goat whole. "Losing the goat is a big financial loss for me," he said.

CPG member Chhagir Sardar said: "We rushed to the spot after getting word from the villagers. There we saw that a big python had swallowed a goat. The snake was then rescued with the help of the forest department and the Wild Team."

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional forest officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said the python was rescued and released into the forest after word came from local people. The forest department is very committed to protecting wildlife, he said.
