A python rescued from an area next to the Sundarbans in Mongla has been released back into the forest. It was rescued from a tree on the bank of the Pashur river on Thursday (9 March) afternoon.

Md Azad Kabir, officer-in-charge of the Karamjal Tourism and Wildlife Breeding Centre in the Chandpai range of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said local people saw the python in the afternoon and informed members of the Community Patrolling Group (CPG), a volunteer organisation of the forest department. They rescued it and released it in the Sundarbans. The python was four feet long and weighed two kilograms.

He said pythons usually lay eggs on high ground along riverbanks, and the young roam inside the forest after hatching. At times some are pulled by the tide or follow fish into inhabited areas. On being informed, this python was rescued and released into the Sundarbans.
