Thirty-three python hatchlings have been released into the Hazarikhil sanctuary in Fatikchhari, Chattogram. The young snakes, of the Burmese rock python species, were born in an incubator at Chattogram Zoo.

The snakes were formally released into the sanctuary on the afternoon of Friday 4 July.

The release was organised by the upazila assistant commissioner (land), Md Nazrul Islam. Also present were Shikdar Atiqur Rahman, Hazarikhil range officer of the Chattogram North Forest Division, and Dr Md Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, curator of Chattogram Zoo.

Range officer Shikdar Atiqur Rahman said the snakes had been released in a safe part of the sanctuary where they can easily adapt to the environment and find the food they need. He said the forest department is always active in wildlife conservation.

Chattogram Zoo curator Dr Shahadat Hossain Shuvo said: "These hatchlings, born in the incubator, have been released into the natural environment after taking into account their age, health and suitability for the habitat. This is an effective step for wildlife conservation."

After the release, assistant commissioner (land) Md Nazrul Islam said: "This sanctuary is the snakes' real and safe home. Here they can grow up in a favourable natural environment."

Upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said: "Tourism potential is developing around this sanctuary. In future, tourists will be able to come here to enjoy close contact with nature. For this, everyone's cooperation is needed alongside the administration's."
