Residents of Mirsarai in Chattogram have caught a python that had come into a residential area, apparently looking for food.

The snake was recovered on the afternoon of Tuesday 15 November from land beside the house of Professor Ayub Ali in Ward 3 of the municipality. It was later handed over to the forest department.

Local resident Harun Or Rashid said the python was seen moving along the ridges of the land beside Professor Ayub Ali's house. The snake was 12 feet long and weighed 25kg. With the help of people in the area it was caught and handed over to the forest department's Gobhoniya range office.

He added that one of his family's ducks had gone missing the day before, and several other people in the area had also lost ducks and chickens. People believe the python had been eating them.

Shahan Shah Noshad, the forest department's Gobhoniya range officer, said the python had been released in the Gobhoniya beat. It may have left the hills for the residential area in search of food, he said.
