Prof Dr Hafiza Khatun, Vice-Chancellor of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST), has given four rare dinosaur fossils to the National Museum authorities. The fossils are 70,000 years old, according to the university. The museum accepted them after examination and verification.
After receiving the fossils, Bangladesh National Museum Director General Md Kamruzzaman sent the vice-chancellor a letter of thanks. Faruk Hossain Chowdhury, deputy director of the PUST public relations office, confirmed the matter to Jago News on Tuesday (2 August).
Brought from Canada in 1984
A press release from the PUST public relations office said the Royal Tyrrell Museum in the Drumheller area of Canada is the world's largest museum where dinosaur fossils have long been collected and displayed. Its collection is the richest in the world and its role in palaeontology is discussed and praised worldwide. Scientists there collected these rare fossils after long surveys in Canada.
Prof Hafiza Khatun went to Canada for research in 1983 and collected the four fossils during her work. She brought them home when she returned to Bangladesh in 1984 and kept them in her own care for 38 years. In April 2021 she handed them over to the Bangladesh National Museum authorities. In a letter signed on 24 July, the museum said it had accepted them after verification, examination and tests.
The four fossils will now be displayed in the natural history department of the Bangladesh National Museum, the release added.
In his letter, Md Kamruzzaman thanked the vice-chancellor and said: "These four fossils have enriched the collection of the National Museum. We hope for more of your cooperation in future."
'Useful to dinosaur researchers'
Speaking about the acceptance of the fossils she collected, Prof Hafiza Khatun said: "These fossils are rare. Scientists in Canada collected them through special surveys. I collected them from those scientists for research and brought them to Bangladesh. They will be useful to those who research dinosaurs."
