The government has approved buying 260,000 tonnes of urea, DAP and TSP fertiliser from domestic and foreign sources for fiscal 2026-27 at a total cost of about Tk 21.07 billion. The cabinet committee on government purchase, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, approved six proposals at the Secretariat on Thursday, Banglanews24 reports.
On the industries ministry's proposal, 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea will be bought from Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company (KAFCO) in the third lot for Tk 1.62 billion, at $438.125 a tonne. Forty thousand tonnes of bulk granular urea will come from Saudi Arabia's SABIC Agri-Nutrients for Tk 2.29 billion, at $463.17 a tonne, and another 40,000 tonnes from Fertiglobe of the UAE for Tk 2.70 billion, at $545 a tonne.
On the agriculture ministry's proposal, under a government-to-government deal between the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) and Morocco's OCP Nutricrops, 80,000 tonnes of DAP will be imported in the sixth and seventh lots of 40,000 tonnes each, each lot costing Tk 4.34 billion at $877 a tonne.
Under the same deal, 30,000 tonnes of TSP in the eighth lot and 40,000 tonnes in the ninth were approved, costing Tk 2.48 billion and Tk 3.30 billion respectively at $667.67 a tonne. The purchases are meant to secure fertiliser supply for the farming season, the report says.
