Entrepreneur Mohammad Al Mamun of Bharatpur, Atgharia, Pabna, has succeeded in pearl farming. He sees great potential in it and is teaching interested people how to produce pearls artificially.
An old practice, little spread
Pearl farming is an old practice, but it has not spread among farmers; for decades it stayed within projects and research of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI). Mamun, a diploma engineer, became interested while looking for extra income alongside his job. After training at BFRI, he began the creative work of producing pearls artificially inside mussels.
First results
Ten months ago he prepared 2,200 mussels for pearl culture in a 40-decimal pond, and he has already harvested 1,000 design pearls. The profit is many times the investment.
Pearl farming is now an easy and promising venture for Mamun, and he is ready to teach the whole technique to interested entrepreneurs. Many local young people have already taken an interest.
