Twelve eggs of the venomous monocled cobra (padma gokhra) have been recovered from a khanqah sharif in Patiya, Chattogram, but members of the snake rescue team could not catch the snake itself.
Snake Rescue Team members recovered the eggs at midday on Tuesday, 14 July, from the Natun Pukurpar Chishtia Khanqah Sharif in ward 6 of Patiya municipality.
Md Naim Uddin Bijoy, senior rescuer with the Chattogram Snake Rescue Team Bangladesh, said the mother snake could not be found when the eggs were recovered, probably because she was out looking for food.
"Snakes are friends of the environment"
Stressing wildlife conservation, he said snakes are great friends of the environment and a very important part of biodiversity. "I urge people who see a snake or snake eggs near their homes not to panic and not to destroy the snake or the eggs, but to inform the Forest Department or a rescue team," he said.
According to local sources, on Tuesday morning locals saw a snake in a run-down corner of the Chishtia Khanqah Sharif in the Natun Pukur Par area of ward 6 of Patiya municipality. They informed the Snake Rescue Team, who found 12 snake eggs while trying to catch the snake.
Locals said the eggs' size and shape, different from ordinary duck and chicken eggs, made people curious. As word spread, onlookers crowded in. At first many tried to destroy the eggs, but aware local young people intervened and the Forest Department was informed.
Selim Ullah, president of the Chishtia Khanqah Sharif management committee, told Jagonews24 that a snake had been seen in a corner of the khanqah on Monday night. When the rescue team was called to catch it, they found 12 eggs and took them away safely.
Eggs to be hatched and released
Md Naim Uddin Bijoy said the recovered eggs belonged to the highly venomous monocled cobra and had been taken into the team's custody fully protected.
They will be hatched artificially using scientific methods, which will take about one and a half to two months, the rescuer said.
Once the young hatch, they will be released in a deep natural forest far from human settlements, he said.
