Dogs attacked a deer in a protected forest in Patharghata, Barguna. Trying to escape, the deer jumped into the river beside the forest. Forest Department staff spotted it and pulled it out injured, but it could not be saved and died under treatment.

The attack happened at about 9.30am on Sunday 30 April in the protected forest of the Haringhata tourism centre in Patharghata upazila. The deer died at the livestock office at about 1pm.

According to the Forest Department, several dogs bit and chased the deer, which jumped into the Bishkhali river next to the forest. Forest staff rescued it at once and brought it to the upazila livestock office for treatment.

Md Al-Amin, the Forest Department's Haringhata beat officer, said the male deer died during treatment. On the administration's instructions its carcass was buried, but the skin has been preserved.

Patharghata Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Arabinda said the deer had bite marks on its neck, several parts of its body and one leg. It died while its leg was being bandaged.
