A python about eight feet long has been rescued in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, and people have been crowding in to see it.

The python got caught in a net around a maize field in the upazila's Burirbari area at 12:30pm on Sunday (23 May). Livestock and Forest Department staff were informed and went to rescue it. The python, about eight feet long, weighs about six kilograms.

Local people, however, said the python got caught in the net of farmer Lutu Mia's maize field at 7am on Sunday. Lutu Mia kept the snake in an iron cage and then informed the upazila police and Forest Department staff.

Dr Md Akhiruzzaman, livestock extension officer in Patgram, said the python had come into the settlement from the jungle along the Indian border in search of food and got caught in the maize field net. It will be rescued and kept at Rangpur Zoo, he said.

Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patgram police station, said two staff members from the Patgram livestock office and Forest Department had gone to the spot to rescue the python after being informed.

Patgram upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Md Saifur Rahman confirmed the matter and said the snake would be handed over to the Forest Department once it was brought to Patgram.
