Rooftop farming comes from a hobby and a pull towards the soil, and it can become a different kind of companion in life. So believes Liakat Hossain of West Bengal, who has built a lovely rooftop farm on his four-storey house.
A companion in later life
All his life, Liakat Hossain has kept plants, creepers, fruit and flowers as close companions. When his children grew up and left home, rooftop farming became his way of overcoming loneliness.
A creative space
The roof of his house in the Park Circus area is his creative space, where over a few years he has gathered many kinds of fruit trees. Many Bangladeshi artists have visited and admired it. His wife is his close partner in the rooftop farm.
The first secretary (press) of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission there said various work is under way to spread rooftop farming in West Bengal too.
