Five thousand palm seeds and saplings of various species have been distributed across the char areas of ten unions in three Padma-side upazilas of Faridpur.

The zila parishad handed out the seeds and saplings to help meet the effects of climate change and to reduce the risk from lightning.

Five hundred fruit and medicinal saplings were given to residents at Bhajondanga on the outskirts of Faridpur town on Tuesday afternoon.

Three hundred palm seeds were planted at the same event.

A tall palm on open char land absorbs a lightning strike, which is why planting palm seeds has become a standing programme in the country's lightning-prone districts.

A palm takes more than two decades to mature, so the benefit will be slow; the roots, however, begin holding char soil together at once.
