The Sirajganj centre of the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Training on Applied Nutrition (BIRTAN) has held a one-day course on 'applied nutrition for good health' for workers preparing to go abroad. It took place on 24 September in the training hall of the Sirajganj Technical Training Centre.
The organisers said 210 outbound workers in seven batches have completed the training in Sirajganj so far this fiscal year, and the courses will continue.
Sessions covered adapting to a foreign climate, a healthy lifestyle, choosing balanced and safe food, drinking enough water, cutting back on salt, sugar and fat, preventing communicable and non-communicable diseases and staying well at work, with practical advice.
They were led by Dr Md Abdul Majid, principal scientific officer at BIRTAN Sirajganj, senior trainer and scientific officer Morsalin Zebin Turin, and Mohammad Golam Nabi, principal of the technical training centre, among others.
Speakers said remittances from migrant workers are a mainstay of the economy and that workers' physical and mental health must be secured before they leave. Good nutrition and healthy eating strengthen immunity and help workers stay productive for longer. Participants received health and nutrition awareness materials at the end.
