The upazila administration has recovered a dead nilgai from Muktar Basti in Dharmagarh union of Ranisankail upazila, Thakurgaon.
The animal died around midday on Friday, 2 July, after it ran about in panic when local people tried to catch it and finally fell after a leap.
Local resident Tarikul said the nilgai had been wandering around the area for several days. At about 12 noon it was near Muktar Basti. When people tried to catch it, the animal began running about, then jumped through the window of a house under construction belonging to a villager named Hamidur, fell inside and lost consciousness. A local veterinarian gave it first aid, but the nilgai could not be saved and died on the spot.
Stroke from fear suspected
On receiving the news, acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pritom Saha went to the spot. "The nilgai probably died of a stroke brought on by panic after being chased," he said. "We will talk to the upazila livestock office and the Forest Department and take the necessary steps. A post-mortem will be carried out if needed."
Earlier sightings in the north
In February this year, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) rescued a nilgai, an endangered wild animal, in Baliadangi upazila. Villagers who saw the unfamiliar animal running through crop fields had caught it and were preparing to slaughter it for meat. BGB members rescued the injured animal and took it to their Kantivita camp, where the upazila veterinary surgeon treated it.
Before that, in January 2019, a male nilgai was caught in the Jotbazar area of Manda upazila in Naogaon. It was first taken to the wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Rajshahi and later released into the mini zoo of Ramsagar National Park in Dinajpur.
Earlier still, in September 2018, a nilgai was rescued near Jaduar village in Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon. Local fishermen spotted it on the bank of the Kulik river, which flows along the Bangladesh-India border, and villagers then held it. Acting on the news, the local administration, with help from Forest Department officials, rescued the nilgai and took it to Ramsagar National Park in Dinajpur.
